- 1a Static Vertical - Vertical personnel platforms (static)
- 1b Static Boom - Trailer push-arounds, vehicle mounted platforms, Self propelled booms (outriggers)
- 3a Mobile Vertical - Scissor Lifts, vertical personnel platforms (mobile)
- 3b Mobile Booms 0 Self propelled booms
There is a special 2a and 2b category for machines not specified above.
The PAL Log Book is given to all candidates for them to fill in over the 5 years life of the card. The track record of experience can be shown by the operator confirming their competence.
Current IPAF Training Courses
IPAF Operator
Course matrix:
Maximum 6 delegates (one category)
4 delegates (two categories)
Duration: 1 Day
A one-day training course covering all aspects relating to the type of equipment your company utilises. The course consists of both theoretical and practical sessions, including Health and Safety and general operating skills. Successful delegates will receive an IPAF Powered Access License Operator card (PAL), an IPAF Certificate of competency, a safety guide and an PAF log book. Valid for 5 years.
IPAF Operator Renewal
Course matrix:
Maximum 10 delegates (one category)
6 delegates (two categories)
Duration: 2-6 Hours
Anyone attending this course must hold a current IPAF Operators license and have at least 60 entries in their IPAF trained operators Log book. They must site the 'operators Renewal course before their existing operators card expires.
A short course to ensure delegates are still competent to operate MEWP's safely and reach he high standard required for the renewal of their Operators card. It includes both a theory test and practical assessment.
Successful delegates will be re-issued with an IPAF Powered Access License Operator card (PAL), an IPAF Certificate of competency, a safety guide and a new PAF log book.
IPAF Demonstrator

Duration: 1 - 3 Days
All applicants must have satisfactorily completed a recognised Operators course*
*Operators course can run consecutively
On completion the trainee will be able to carry out the required tasks involved in the role of Demonstrator which is to familiarise operator with their responsibilities and demonstrate pre-operational and safe operating procedure and the limitations of MEWPS. It includes both a theory test and practical assessment.
This course if for employees of Hire/Rental or Transport companies in order to fulfil their legal obligation to provide information and familiarisation to the customers upon hand-over on delivery.
Successful candidates will receive an IPAF Powered Access License Operator card (PAL), an IPAF Certificate of competency, a safety guide and an PAF log book. Valid for 5 years.
IPAF Safety Harness

IPAF Safety Harness
Duration: Minimum of a 1/2 Day
This course is to enable delegates who operate MEWP's to identify and select the correct form of safety harness and lanyard and be able to inspect, maintain, monitor, fit and use hem effectively.
Note: Persons trained by the IPAF instructors to this level are capable of day to day inspection of their equipment, as well as the selection and use. However these people are not considered to be competent persons for the purpose of mandatory periodic inspection. To acquire the status of competent person then they require additional training.
Successful delegates will receive an IPAF Certificate and not a PAL card.
IPAF MEWP's for Managers
Course matrix:
Maximum 10 delegates
Duration: 1 Day
Specific for all Managers or Supervisors who have their responsibility for organising or controlling the use of MEWPs. The aim is to instruct a Supervisor/Manager what is required to prepare for and safely co-ordinate various types of MEPs within their control.
Successful candidates will receive an IPAF Certificate and an Operators Safety guide.
